There is an added attraction near New Farm Library, courtesy of architect Lucia Laus, whose colourful artwork adorns an Energex box adjacent to the entrance in Sydney Street.
The artist, Lucia Laus wrote about her artwork “Shared is Better”: This artwork is a joyful tribute to New Farm Park, where cute, quirky characters come to life, enjoying the magic this iconic Brisbane spot has to offer. Inspired by the park’s vibrant flora and fauna, and the many beautiful moments I’ve spent there, I wanted to capture its spirit of connection, joy and community.
Whether it’s relaxing under the Jacaranda trees, discovering stories in the library, smelling the roses, enjoying an ice cream in the sun, buying delicious food at the markets, or watching a show at the Powerhouse, there’s always something to enjoy and share.
I’ve also found inspiration in quietly observing others enjoying their own slice of life — laughing, playing, picnicking and exploring. This piece celebrates connection, curiosity and the beauty of sharing simple pleasures. Day and night, New Farm Park is rich with energy, colour and smiles. I hope this painting brings a smile to many faces, too.
The Book ‘Reflections on New Farm’ written by Gerard Benjamin for the New Farm and Districts Historical Society has been incorporated into the painting as a small tribute to the stories and memories connected to this special place. I believe that the history of a place is an important part of its identity and should be shared and carried forward through generations. As places change and time passes, preserving these memories allows us to remain connected to the people, stories and moments that came before us, while creating new memories for the future.
Lucia Laus is an architect by profession, with a lifelong passion for creativity and art. Although architecture has been her professional path, drawing, painting and making things with her hands have always been an important part of how she expresses ideas, emotions and stories. She enjoys bringing together her design background with playful, colourful and meaningful creations that connect with people and the places around them.
After working and collaborating on several volunteer art projects around Brisbane through the Artforce Brisbane program, Lucia was honoured to be named the Overall Art Winner in 2024 for her Climbing Kangaroo piece. As part of this recognition, she was given the opportunity to paint this Energex box at New Farm Park as her second artwork.
