22nd April 2023 | Speaker: Brian Martin
Brian will talk about the PENSACOLA CONVOY, seven American military transport ships and their escorting warship which were making a routine voyage to the Philippines when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7th 1941.
The damage inflicted was so severe that existing plans for the U. S. Navy to defeat Japan were suddenly rendered unworkable.
One urgent and most important matter was the defence of the Philippine Islands, then an American protectorate with General Douglas MacArthur commanding the army and air forces. Military planners in Washington debated where to send the Pensacola convoy until President Roosevelt decided it should come to Brisbane.
